Canberra Walking Festival was held over the weekend. 10 members and two former members participated. It rained., it snowed, wind/sleet and more rain. Then the sun came out and off we went, rough calculations on the journey home; we figured the overall shared walking distance by the Mudgee contingent was over 204klm & some; our two visitors Joe & Joy did 27klm each.
Friday walk: was for the Heart Foundation with a 5klm guided tour of Canberra followed by refreshments at Albert Hall.
The Mudgee contingent chose to do the 11klm walks for both Saturday & Sunday, their are other options: 21klm down to a 5klm.
Saturday: distance to be walked 11klm. A cold and windy day saw the majority head off, with maps in hand, 2 stayed behind to support another who had a misfortune in the first 100meters. The map took them through the Chinese gardens, walking along the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin, visiting the James Blundell cottage, back over the bridge where gale force winds hampered their speed to return back to Albert Hall (before the rain).
Sunday: distance walked 11klm. Coaches were at the ready and transported all the 11klm participants out to the lower side of the Arboretum; then maps in hand walked through the cork plantation noted a checkpoint up and over a style and conquered a steady climb along a firetrail up and under, down and in and through to another trail that crept up towards Black Mountain (Telstra Tower), great views to be had and then entering the back area of the Botanical gardens for another checkpoint and a hot cuppa to go with some scrumptious sandwiches (made earlier in the day). Then the continued journey walking through the lakes foreshores over the bridge and return to Albert Hall.
With over 500 participants registered for the walking festival a great shout out to the amazing committee that prepared and hosted the 28th annual walking festival.
