Glow Worm Tunnel & Newnes Ruins

Date: Sunday 6 March 2022.

There was a lot of interest the last two times this activity was programmed and both walks were washed out. 3rd time lucky and now is the best time to visit. We will drive to Newnes Village (about 2 hrs via Wolgan Road) have morning tea at the Former Newnes Hotel.

Group A: – Glow Worm Tunnel. The walk:  9km return. Grade: 3 – Medium. Group B: – Explore at our leisure the historic Newnes village.

Glow Worm Tunnel: Please take care in the tunnel, it can be wet and slippery. Bring a torch – it is dark in the tunnel. And keep noise to a minimum as glow worms are sensitive to sound. Starting point is at an unmarked gateway and weir across the Wolgan River, some 6.5km south of the Newnes Hotel. Information signs posted along the track.

To participate in the walk you need to be vaccinated. Your leaders: Group A: Feroz Wani – Group B: Johanna (Joby) Mitchell and Elly Rands.

Meet at 7.30am: Lovejoy Street (Douro St End) car park for meet and greet, necessary paperwork, organise carpooling (allowed). Re- meet at Capertee Rest stop for a toilet break if required. We are going to wait for each other at the Petrol Station on the corner of Castlereagh Highway and Wolgan Road. Note: Directions – Mudgee to Lidsdale 115km (allow 1 1/2hr), At the village of Lidsdale turn Left onto the Wolgan Road towards Newnes 34km (allow 1/2hr). 

What to bring: Morning tea to share, water to drink, lunch to eat. What to wear: Suitable clothing, hat, sturdy walking shoes and a pair of dry socks, walking poles (optional). Later in the afternoon we will have an opportunity to inspect the accommodation cabins for future adventures – day walks to explore this wonderful heritage listed National Park without having to camp.
