MUNGHORN TRIG & COOYAL PUB ROCK

Leader: Digger (Guy Kemp)

On Sunday 18 March about 15 of us headed off from the Castle Rocks Car Park for the Munghorn Trig Point.  The plan was to walk on a bearing to the trig, then follow the ridge line to the huge rock above the Cooyal Pub.  The day began well with several people lucky enough to see a Lyre Bird even before we left.

When we did this walk four years ago it was a great day out with superb views from the rock.  However, last Sunday was a little hotter than usual, the scrub was a lot thicker than usual and even in single file the effort required was quite surprising.  After an hour and a half of fairly solid bush-bashing Digger called a halt and suggested we re-assess the walk given the very slow rate of progress and the heat.  It was generally agreed that it might not be the best day for it.

Lunch seemed like a good idea. But while most of us were eating Jenny, our in house artist, got out her paint box and produced a beautiful little water colour in no time at all.

Retracing our steps (Digger showed some folks how to use the Silva compass in reverse) we moved out again.  We moved a little faster downhill, heading for a road crossing about 200m below our start point.  This achieved the desired effect of missing the horrible tangle that had threatened to swallow us whole on the outward leg.

The Cooyal Pub made us welcome and although we hadn’t achieved the day’s objective, good spirits prevailed among a general sense of “We’ll get there next time.”
