We had a nice size group of 11 who set out early for Mt Canobolas, 8 from Mudgee and 3 from Gulgong meeting at Lake Canobolas all at the same time for morning tea at 10am. We found ourselves surrounded by the Orange triathlon club who had taken over the park for their event.
We then drove approx. 13 ks to the entrance of Mount Canobolas State Recreation Area. The Canobolas Way, a steep, dirt but well maintained road led us to the summit of Mt Canobolas to be inspired by the fantastic view.
After a short drive down again to the Federal Falls Picnic & camping area we parked the cars and set out to do the Falls 4.6 km loop in a clockwise direction. The track was well maintained and easy in most parts, with just a few rocky steep descents to a junction 2km from the start.
We left 3 members there to rest while the others tackled another steep section which had a handrail to help, to the bottom of the Federal Falls. The falls were spectacular and there was plenty of water being blown in the wind to give us a cool shower. John went exploring as usual and found a huge cave behind a huge pile of rocks a the base. A bit slippery for most so only 3 members went exploring in the cave which was lovely and cool. The few wildflowers that were on show were just beautiful, just like a piece of yellow glass.
All the walkers managed the steep and steady climb back to the picnic ground where we had a lovely lunch at a picnic table.
After lunch we explored the 2.2 km Nature walk and lookout.
The weather was fine and pleasant, enough cloud cover to keep the heat down.
We departed Mount Canobolas at about 3.30 pm for the 180 km trip home.
All in all a day well spent.
