Walk: Pipeline Track – Glen Davis to Newnes. (Report).

By popular request the decision was made to do the Pipeline Track in one day: Sunday 22 May 2022 – with a 6.00am start!!!

Notes: The walkers commenced at Glen Davis and finished at Newnes. (about 10km). Walkers were dropped off at Glen Davis & 4 vehicles collected them from Newnes. The brief below is from member Colleen Lovell.

“Pipeline track today’s hike. A very early start 6am drive to Glen Davis with a few stops on the way to pick up folk “Michelle”. Meet & greet Wayne & Carolyn McDonald and Colin Betts, Morning tea (a must) and then a short drive to our starting point. The day was cool, misty and looked like showers were possible (so Bonnie decided to stay with Aunty Joby and be warm and dry). This walk was a 2 partner the first was up the second part down. But the view from the lookout at the top was to die for.. not much wet stuff from the sky on the way up but basically for the the walk down we had showers, making the descent a bit more tricky and slippery. I managed one soft fall but my trusty pole saved me a few times. An amazing walk with the cliffs rising on both sides and the sound of water running below. The bell birds in the valley added to the charm and the company was excellent. We had lunch at the lookout after finding a place away from the wind and the light rain, a very special spot to enjoy the valley stretching out below. I had to stop to look around as the descent was steep, full of climb over spots for very short legs, with mud and leaf litter. But the views were worth stopping for. Quite a few wild flowers out and the wattle was in bloom filling the air with its perfume. Lots of fungi and mushrooms to find along the track too. (Brian I am not sure how all these photos got on my phone). After a slow and steady pace we got down to the river and wandered along the banks for about a kilometre looking at old storage tanks, metal structures for the pipe and even the remains of the front steps to the managers house. After a short series of well constructed steps and one large drop we navigated a creek and we’re welcomed at Newnes camping site. A cuppa and cake (2 birthdays to celebrate; Eric Caswell & Wayne McDonald) for a refresh before heading back home. A wonderful walk about 9.5k in an amazing part of our beautiful country. A huge thanks to Brian and Eric who did the original leg work and were our leaders today. We also had a map reading practical lesson with us having to figure out where we were on the map by looking at the countryside around us. Very instructive and useful. A big thanks to the drivers who dropped us off at Glen Davis and then drove all the way round to welcome us at Newnes we could not have been able to this walk without them”
